However, when considering these top and extremely expensive cars, you would wonder whether the prime purpose of automobiles has been forgotten. Cars in this class are meant to suit the needs and tastes of the top less than one percent population of the universe, and in this world; style, swagger and flamboyance always carry the day. Words like efficiency and affordability do not feature in this context.

In this list, we are going to look at the top five most expensive cars in the world, but just to make it clear, we shall only be featuring road-legal as well as recently produced models. Race cars and vintages sold in auctions at mind blowing prices are also excluded from the list. Also, all the prices quoted are in US dollars.

Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita- $4.8m

The Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita is a Swedish-made ultra-rare vehicle. With only two units produced, the company describes these cars as “Diamonds on Wheels” which literally, is quite true. This rare piece of art has what is called the “Koenigsegg Proprietary Diamond Weave” body. The body is made of carbon fibre which has diamond dust resin included in the coating. Under the hood, there is a dual supercharged V8 engine that churns out about 1,004hp and a torque of 797 pound-feet. 0-60mph takes about 2.9s and the top speed is 254mph.

Lamborghini Veneno Roadster- $4.5m

Produced since 2014 to mark the 50^th anniversary of the automaker, the Lamborghini Veneno were sold out even before production was complete. There were only nine units produced and this fierce looking sports car is truly in a league of its own. The exterior design notwithstanding, the interior looks like a spacecraft that we normally see in many science fiction movies. Owners quickly forget the holes created in their pockets by the price tag of the car once they enter into this machine and hit top speeds of 350km/h. The 6.5l V12 engine accelerates the vehicle from 0-100km/h in 2.9 seconds as well as coughing out 740hp.

Lykan Hypersport- $3.4m

You may never have heard of it but most likely you have already seen it, not physically, but in a movie. This W motors supercar featured in the blockbuster movie: The fast and furious 7. Being another limited edition vehicle, only seven were produced. This is also the first supercar to be manufactured in the Middle East which is one of the top markets for such high-end cars. So why is this car so prestigious? Well, this is the first of its kind to feature headlights with embedded jewels. The buyers have an option of rubies, diamonds or sapphires. It also has titanium LED plates among other top notch features. Under the hood, there is a twin-turbo flat-six engine that produces 740hp with an acceleration of 0-100km/h in 2.8s. Top speed is about 240mph. Interestingly, the Abu Dhabi police bought one of these cars for patrolling duties….Well, enough said!

Bugatti Veyron, Mansory Vivere edition- $3.4m

The mighty Bugatti Veyron as it is popularly known has the reputation of not only being one of the world’s most expensive cars but also one of the fastest. The Mansory Vivere edition is a limited edition and features a complete revamp of the normal Veyron. The exterior and interior are all redesigned with the new carbon-fibre body and redesigned front grill standing out. This car produces a massive 1200hp and hits a top speed of 254mph.

Ferrari Pininfarina Sergio- $3m

Our list of the top five most expensive cars in the world cannot end without a Ferrari. Although not the most expensive car in this list, this is one of the most coveted cars in the world. Only six units were manufactured in the legendary and famous Italian design complex Pininfarina. Basically, this car is a Ferrari 458 Spider with a new body and interior. The V8 engine under the hood produces a whooping 562hp making it also one of the fastest cars in the world.
