Audi A5 Coupe: Even Better Than Before
The second generation of Audi A5 Coupe, launched in 2016, is based on the Volkswagen Group MLB platform, same as its sister car A4. The two cars from the B9 family are also sharing engines and many design characteristics. Of course, the new A5 is more sporty and athletic than its relative, which is normal for a car that bears Coupe in its name. The good image of this car is underpinned with its presence in the world famous DTM racing series.
AT A GLANCE
Upsides
- Sporty and masculine look
- Quattro version has outstanding performance
- High-tech equipment
Downsides
- Lack of space in the rear seats
Design – 5/5
Audi designers had a problem on how to make the award-winning design of the first-gen Audi A5 even more beautiful, and at the end, they succeeded. The perfectly balanced proportions with a long engine hood stretched wheelbase, and short overhangs underscore the sportiness of the new A5 Coupe. The sculpted Singleframe grille is significantly flatter and wider compared to the previous model. The finely contoured headlights are perfectly harmonized with the horizontal lines of the front end. The short rear end features clearly horizontal lines and the luggage compartment lid ends in a distinctive spoiler lip.
Engine, drivetrain, and performance – 5/5
The A5 Coupe is launched with five engines, two variants of the 2.0 TFSI and three TDIs. Both TFSI engines are coming to Singapore, paired with the 7-speed S-Tronic gearbox. The top version produces 252 hp and 370 Nm of torque, coming with Quattro AWD system. Performance is sporty; the car sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds on its way to electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. The unit consumes 5.9 l/100 km. The second variant has 190 hp and 320 Nm, sprinting to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds. Audi claims that this engine consumes only 5.1 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers.
Trim levels – 5/5
The entry-level 2.0 TFSI 190hp engine comes with Design trim package while the stronger Quattro variant hit the market with Sport package. Standard equipment of the A5 includes sport seats with Milano leather trim, 18-inch alloy wheels and LED headlights. The new A5 Coupe also features Audi Virtual Cockpit as standard. The large 12.3-inch TFT display puts everything the driver needs directly in front of him with rich-detailed graphics. Together with the MMI navigation plus including 8.3-inch monitor on the center console, it’s a complete and potent central information unit.
Safety – 5/5
When talking about safety, A5 Coupe comes standard with the Audi pre sense city safety system. At speeds of up to 85 km/h, the system scans the road using a front camera installed on the windshiled with a range of more than 100 meters. If it notices an imminent collision, the driver will get a series of warnings, and if needed, the car will initiate maximum braking. At speeds up to 85 km/h, warnings and brake interference lessen the impact velocity. Another interesting standard feature is attention assist, which analyzes the driver’s behavior and issues a warning when it detects that the driver is being inattentive.
Conclusion: 5.0/5.0
The new Audi A5 is a phenomenal premium coupe which offers even more than its eulogistic predecessor. The great feeling when only seating in the high-tech interior converts into pure enjoyment when driving a car, especially the Quattro variant of the 2.0 TFSI model. Even the 190hp engine offers enough to put a smile on a driver’s face, as the stiff suspension allows to run the front-wheel-drive variant in Sport mode. But, Audi A5 isn’t just a premium sporty coupe, it can also be a functional every-day car because of its decent-sized 465-litre boot.
