Should You Say Goodbye To ICE cars?

Internal combustion engine cars, or for short, ICE cars, have long been the go-to car for drivers. ICE cars are usually powered by gasoline or diesel, which are liquids created from fossil fuels. So, as our world moves away from fossil fuels towards renewable energies, might it be time to say goodbye to ICE cars? Well, keep reading to find out.

ICE Cars 

ICE cars have been around for centuries. To completely get rid of them is not in the cards. Gas stations, refineries, they’re part of billions of dollars worth of infrastructure supporting ICE cars. So, it’s difficult to image a world where we can get rid of all of this. 

However, that does not diminish the fact that many have seen ICE vehicles as a key perpetrator in pollution. In Singapore, the domestic transport sector contributes to a significant amount of greenhouse gas emissions, and ICE vehicles are one of the many contributors to that pollution. 

Because of this, many countries have made firm stances against ICE vehicles. They plan on phasing them out to reach zero-emission, where everything is electric. 

Shift towards EVs and Hybrids 

In an effort to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, many have made an effort to move towards cleaner engine sources like EVs and Hybrids. Although EVs and Hybrids are not as clean as they seem, they are a part of the movement to which we can move towards cleaner technologies. This movement has been especially prevalent in Singapore where Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat stated that by 2040, Singapore wants to phase out ICE vehicles, and instead incentivise Singaporeans to buy EVs and Hybrids. 

This goes hand in hand with car manufacturers who have also been actively developing cleaner engine technologies for Hybrids and EVs. 

To promote this shift to cleaner energies, Singapore created long-term plans and incentives for those who purchase Hybrids and EVs. 

Singapore’s plan for EVs and Hybrids

Singapore has created a lot of incentives to further the move towards EVs and Hybrids. In 2018, Singapore introduced a new commercial vehicle emissions scheme, offering an upfront rebate between $20,000 to $30,000 to car buyers and taxi operators who chose cleaner car models. 

Mister Heng also announced that those who purchased fully electric cars and taxis would receive a rebate of up to 45% on the additional registration fee, capped at $20,000. This will be implemented for three years, which started in January 2021. 

Furthermore, they’ve also begun expanding infrastructure for EVs. There are currently about 1,600 charging points islandwide, and the Government plans to work with the private sector to add chargers in public car parks. By 2030, they aim to have up to 28,000 chargers. 

Is it time to say goodbye to ICE vehicles? 

As we move towards cleaner alternatives, there’ve been more incentives to own EVs and Hybrids.
